WOODWORKING - The Making of a Bombe Chest on Chest

Posted By admin in Woodworking

Woodworking is my passion - after30+ years I can still say that woodworking cannot be mastered, yes, you may achieve mastery of woodworking techniques…but you will NEVER conquer woodworking.

The slideshow here is the making of a Bombe Chest on Chest. Modeled after one I measured and photographed at the DeWitt Wallace Museum in Williamsburg, VA. At this time, it is probably the most difficult piece completed in my woodworking career.

Having said that, I must now tell you that to build again would be very easy. The woodworking techniques and tools, now have all the questions answered.

Woodworking projects, no matter what the final outcome, is simply shaping wood. Woodworking is sometimes trial and error, in woodworking, to be successful, you must be willing to make the errors and learn from them.

I hope you enjoy the slide show.

Happy Woodworking

NK Forster Guitars Making a Guitar - bending sides

Posted By admin in Woodworking

Bending an Indian Rosewood guitar side, by hand. It was getting a bit dull to watch so I chopped a couple of little bits out - the total time was about 10 mins. The non cutaway side took around 6. Must be getting slow! It takes nearly that long to put sides in a modern bending machine.

If I compromised the design - made the waist and the cutaway less tight it would be quicker still, but that’s putting the cart before the horse eh? Design first, that’s my way.

Kentucky 1964, William Gedney Photos - Music by Dock Boggs

Posted By admin in Blacksmithing

The music for this video is now available for download on my Multiply video storage site. Please see my Profile page for the link. Appalachia is a place rich in traditions, music, folk arts and crafts, religious beliefs, and pride but some parts of it are very poor in many other ways. These photos may well have been taken in many places in Kentucky, West Virginia or other parts of the coal mining regions of Appalachia today, as the last recent color photo shows. Or in many parts of this country or the world for that matter. Yes, I editorialize a bit after the video ends so stick around. Dock Boggs is a folk singer from Appalachia who was first discovered in the 1920s and then rediscovered in 1963 by Mike Seeger. This traditional Appalachian folk song, Calvary, was recorded during his second period. It can be found on the CD “Dock Boggs: His Folkways Years (1963-1968).” This is just a plain, stark video, no fancy transitions, just like the story it’s telling.

How To TIE-DYE a SPIDER style design. (start to finish)

Posted By admin in Fabric Painting

A step by step guide to folding and dying a SPIDER style design for a tie-dyed t-shirt.

From step one to final wearing… an easy guide.

This is a dark dye example, not a bright colour shirt.

(PS: You don’t have to walk around the table if you make yourself a tool of some type… as long as the spin is tight, that is what matters).
