    Wow, you are good …
Wow, you are good at wood working too. Simply Amazing. That is neat. So the hole is always in the perfect center. Noticed how well the wooden wheel spun. That cut you did would take about 10 min on a ban saw. GOOD VIDEO THANK FOR THE IDEA!

    HI,
Yes because the bolt is the turning point, it will always be the center. Balancing the wooden wheels for flywheels is easy since you know your wood is centered. The big 23 inch circle in the opener took only took 5 minutes to cut from start to finish. NO PENCIL MARKS:-)

Once again I’m amazed how things seemed to be easily done when you got all those modern and efficient tools as you had. I’m from a third-world country, Madagascar (the Island, not the movie) and it’s pretty hard to use tools like your saw-table. Nevertheless I do recognize I could achieve the same goal (almost) using very basic tools as a manual saw. Thanks a lot. I do appreciate your contribution to a better world!

If you keep going like this I’m going to able to have my own version of the Spanish solar power station in no time.
    Can’t wait till episode 3.

Wait wait wait–I can buy sheets of plexiglass mirror? And form them in the oven?

    Where?

I can make a cylindrical parabolic mirror like this!

  6. GREENPOWERSCIENCE Says:

    For a trough Mirror …
For a trough Mirror it is EASY. I will post a DIY on that next week. The mirror is PLEXI Glass - AKA Acrylic. Plexi is a brand name like Coke or Pepsi. Most people know “Plexi”. Look for Acrylic Mirrors. Most plastic companies sell 4′ x 8′ sheets for $70-$100.

  7. GREENPOWERSCIENCE Says:

    Smaller 4×4 sheets …
Smaller 4×4 sheets are $25-$30. You can use several large regular mirrors bathroom etc focused on the back of the acrylic mirror and it can be shaped easily. This is great for forming large trough Acrylic mirrors as you do not need a Giant Oven.

That’s weird–I thought I posted a comment with a link to a pretty low priced place.

Anyway, I’m looking forward to the trough. I’m trying to think of some good way to get a parabolic form to shape to and the best I can think of is just “cut really carefully”.

    Very cool. How …
Very cool. How thick of wood dose it work with? I tried it with 3/4″ plywood and it took 15 turns but the circle was perfect WOW THANKS A LOT!

  11. GREENPOWERSCIENCE Says:

    Use a large barrel …
Use a large barrel or tank for short troughs. For larger wider ones, bend a thin sheet 1/4″ of plywood to the curve and lock in place (many ways to do it). Put the acrylic mirror side down and heat the back with multi mirrors or a hairdryer. Please email me the link and I will pass it on.

    That would be a …
That would be a circular arc. I’ll have to do the math (or an experiment) to see if that’s close enough.

    Good work guys!

    Hi,

    Hi,
I have cut a 2″ thick x 36″ Diameter before. Thicker boards work best with larger circles. The smallest you can safely cut of any thickness with this method is 10″ to 12″ Diameter. If you choose to cut a smaller circle, USE A LARGER BOARD 20″x20″ to cut the small circle. This way your fingers NEVER VIOLATE the 1 foot rule of the saw blade. Better to waste wood than fingers. BE SAFE.

the only problem will be finding a *parabolic* shaped lid.

i got a question: can you use the same glass lid to shape another mirror? i mean does the plastic mirror get stuck to the glass?

    thanks for the great video!

  19. GREENPOWERSCIENCE Says:

    YES to reuse the …
YES to reuse the glass. It does not get stuck. Now that you mention it, I should have shown the removal process. Once it cools, it falls out. Yard sales are great. Also old water tanks have paraboloids on the bottom. Also you can copy any paraboloid with cement, I will have a video soon of that.

i’ve made a parabolic pattern out of plaster and coated it with varnish, for protection. i just took 3 pics of it, i posted the URLs for the images in my profile’s description (since URLs are not allowed in comments).

i haven’t had enough time lately to work on that, but next i’ll make a housing for an accurately placed vertical axis, which will be
used to turn the pattern and shape a parabolic plaster mold.

your videos will be very useful for me to proceed! thanks a lot, man!
