I don’t crochet that tight. It is probably the yarn. It doesn’t not happen all the time. Red Heart 4-ply is a stiffer yarn and that is what I was using in that project.

how many stitches would you use for kid’s different size heads to adult and baby.

It’s alright, asking questions is how you learn. When all the increasing is done, you do a row of star stitch. When that row is complete you do a row of 2 HDC in the joining loop of the previous row. Every other row is alternating, starstitch, HDC, starstitch, HDC. Have you been able to find the instructions on my crochet blog? It might help if you are able to see how the rows go together with each other. Just a thought.
